General Giuseppe Garibaldi

Be hopeful, my country! Never lose faith when foreign bullies and native thieves, like the cowards they are, pile affliction on you. Your brave young men are not yet all gone: the men who stood on the barricades in Brescia, Milan, Casale, on the bridge over the Mincio, on the bulwarks of Venice, Bologna, Anacona, Palermo, in the streets of Naples, Messina, Livorno, on the Janiculum Hill and in the Forum of the ancient capital of the world. They are scattered all over the globe, but all are stirred with love for you their motherland, unequalled among nations, and by the desire to save you - something the speculators and the compromisers who have sold off your limbs and your very blood will never understand, unless they should on the day when you are washed clean of the filth with which they have besmirched you! Never lose faith! Marked by the ferocity of the battles they have fought, they will appear to fight again at the head of your new generation; they will have been brought up to hate, they will be familiar with the massacres perpetrated by priests and foreigners, they will be re-emboldened by the memory of so much outrage and by the desire to revenge so much suffering in prisons and in exile. No one can tell how long Italy will languish, but all know equally well that the hour of her resurrection cannot be far away.
